We’re not a 5-star, full-service hotel - we don’t pretend to be - and our prices are nothing of the sort. In reference to his claims, we would like to be clear about the following: 1. He ultimately decided to stay and, for this reason, we believe he was unhappy - and he decided to lash out with this review, making completely untrue and unsubstantiated statements about the Inn and the owner in the process. In his case, we were unable to fill the room and he would have had to incur the cancellation charge. Unfortunately, we’re not always able to accomplish this despite our best efforts. When these situations arise, we try to fill the room with other reservation requests as they come in to avoid charging anyone who’s unable to fulfill their reservation commitment, for whatever reason. Last-minute cancellations are subject to a charge equal to one-night’s stay, a policy that is stated clearly on our website and during the reservation process. Fast forward to his visit… when he arrived, he informed us that he did not want the room for the final night. He reserved those nights with us and found somewhere else to stay for the second night. Initially, he inquired about staying three consecutive nights with us but we could only accommodate him for two of the three dates - the first and the last night. However, we became aware that he was disappointed by a conflict between his travel itinerary and our clearly stated reservation policy. Our interaction with this unsatisfied guest was actually quite pleasant while he stayed with us, no complaints were expressed during his stay. We’ve been fortunate and flattered to receive mostly words of praise - over 80% of our 207 reviews have come with an “excellent” rating (the highest on TripAdvisor’s scale) and half of the other reviews have received “very good.” But, every once in awhile, there’s a peculiar outlier as is the case with this review. We think it’s great when anyone takes time out to share their experience at The Gaslight Inn with the TripAdvisor community. We'll certainly return on a future trip to Seattle, but possibly opt for a rear-facing room. The B&B provides a light continental breakfast rather than a cooked, sit-down one, which was fine for us, but don't expect the British eggs-and-rashers treatment. Also, while we like a firm mattress, this one edged a touch over into too hard - a removable topper would have solved that. The only quibble was that on our (very short) stay, the street outside was quite noisy with passing firetrucks and ambulances - this was a Saturday night, that may have made it worse. The room in which we stayed was very large and comfortable, with an en-suite bathroom. It's a beautiful house, albeit on busy 15th st, and even more beautiful inside, having been meticulously restored and maintained, and decorated with lovely Pacific Northwest artworks and furnished with a great collection of Stickley furniture. We wanted to stay in the Capitol Hill area of Seattle in order to walk to an event we were attending, and to good places for dinner before, and the Gaslight Inn looked like the nicest place around.
